Gearbox Software / Steam

If you’ve been in the PC gaming hobby for a while, when the Steam sales roll around, you might be so full of games that you’re not interested in buying new ones. But it’s a good time to get DLC for your existing games cheaply.

When DLC (downloadable content) first comes out for games, it’s usually quite expensive. Even when it’s not particularly expensive in and of itself when you buy this DLC and that DLC, it all adds up pretty quickly.

But after a game has been out for a while and when there’s a big sale on Steam, you’ll find loads of heavily discounted DLC.

So even if you’re not in the market for a new game, it’s a good time to add content to games in your library that you’re currently enjoying or would like to return to.

There are two ways to find DLC for the games you own. The first way, using Steam natively, is to simply search for the game you want to check out the DLC for on the website. If you know specifically which game you want to expand with DLC, it’s easy. Put the name, like Cities: Skylines in the search box and marvel at the amount of DLC out there.

Unfortunately, Steam doesn’t make it easy to see all of the DLC available across all of your games in one central place. On the main page, it will highlight a few DLCs at a time, as seen below, but there’s no option to browse a giant master list of all the DLC available for the games you own.

Notice that there is a “See all games on your wishlist” button but no “See all DLC games for your games” button, which is a shame. Who wouldn’t click on it?

Fortunately, third-party tools come to the rescue. If you go to Steamdb.info, you can link your Steam account and Steamdb.info, when the DLC filter is applied, it will show you all available DLC for the games you currently own in one convenient central list.

In the screenshot below, you can see some of the DLC available for the games I own. Browsing Steam for all of these DLCs would have taken quite a bit of time, and I definitely would have missed more than a few of them.

But now I can easily see what’s available and quickly adjust filters to filter out poorly rated DLC, anything that isn’t 50% or more off, etc.

In addition to sorting through DLC using Steamdb.info filters, here are some additional tips to help you save on DLC.

Anytime you’re considering buying a single DLC, make sure the sale doesn’t also include a DLC bundle with additional stacked discounts.

If you only want a specific DLC, by all means buy just that one. But often, for just a few bucks more, you can get a handful of major and minor DLC.

Also, don’t overlook bundles that include the base game or updated versions of the base game with titles like “Game of the Year” or “Definitive Edition” or similar titles. You might think “I already have the main game” and not think twice, but there are two good reasons to search.

First, the way Steam handles packages is more streamlined and user-friendly than in the past. You can buy a bundle that includes a game (or even DLC) you already own and you’ll still get the bundle discount.

Second, “Game of the Year” type releases, especially for older games, are usually quite heavily discounted. Why pay $2 for 10 different DLCs when you can pay $10 for the “Game of the Year” edition which includes the base game and every DLC ever released for the game? Sure you’re technically buying the game twice, but you’re getting a ton of content for a very low price in the process.

So even if you’re not interested in investing in a new video game right now, you can make more of your existing titles by grabbing some cheap DLC.
