  1. Touch and hold a person icon on the Snapchat “Chat” screen.
  2. Carefully drag to the right (but don’t release) while reading the person’s message.
  3. Drag your finger to the left again and release to leave the message unread.

Have you ever wanted to read a message on Snapchat without alerting the sender that you’ve read it? You can, with a half slide (also called a half slide). It’s possible to swipe half your finger on both the iPhone and Android versions of Snapchat, and we’ll show you how.

Note: As of December 2022, we have confirmed that half swiping works on Snapchat. However, since it is not an official feature, it may stop working at any time with future app updates.

What exactly is a half swipe on Snapchat?

A half swipe, as the name implies, is a swipe across the screen, but not a full one. This trick allows you to stealthily read messages without the senders knowing.

You may already know that Snapchat notifies the sender when you read their message. With a half swipe, you can read the message, but neither Snapchat nor the sender will know you’ve done it. This is because you’re not technically opening the message, so Snapchat won’t send a read receipt.

Note that this trick only works for reading messages; you can’t see Snaps with half swipe.

Performing a half-swipe or half-swipe on Snapchat is easy, but you need to do it correctly or you risk letting the sender know that you’ve read their message.

Advice: Consider practicing first swiping half your finger over a message you don’t care about.

To make a half slide, first, launch the Snapchat app on your iPhone or Android phone. Then on the bottom bar of the app, tap on the “Chat” tab.

Select the tab "chat" on the bottom.

On the “Chat” screen, find the conversation in which you want to read a message. Don’t touch the conversation or you’ll end up opening it.

Next to the chosen chat, touch and hold the sender’s Bitmoji or profile icon and swipe to the right, but don’t release it yet.

You will see the chosen message is revealed when you swipe to the right. Keep your fingers on the screen while reading the message.

Note: If you try to take a screenshot while swiping in the middle of a message, the sender will be notified.

Make sure you don’t swipe all the way and release.

When you have finished reading the message, drag your finger to the left to close the open message. Then you can release your slide.

If everything went well, then under the name of your friend on the “Chat” screen you will still see the label “New chat”. This confirms that you have not officially read that message and that the sender has not been notified.
