Range anxiety and slow charging could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to new EV battery technology set to arrive in 2023. The Chinese battery maker and one of the world’s largest EV battery providers , CATL, recently introduced its new battery cells capable of 620 miles of charge.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Limited (CATL) of China provides battery cells for electric vehicles to manufacturers around the world and is one of the largest suppliers to Tesla. It’s calling the new battery technology “Qilin,” which features a breakthrough that increases the energy density of its cell-to-pack technology.
In a press release this week, the company said that these new cells have a record volume utilization efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg. The upgrade offers a range of more than 620 miles or 1,000 kilometers per charge, not to mention several other advances.
The company claims it can offer the same pack size as the popular 4680 batteries that Tesla recently started using in the Model Y, but it will be 13% more powerful and efficient.
That’s not all, either. Advances made with its third-generation cell-to-pack technology will deliver overall improvements in EV range, charging speeds, safety, lifespan, efficiency and low-temperature performance. Basically, solving many of the current weak points of electric vehicles.
When it comes to charging, CATL’s latest Qilin battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 10 minutes, faster than anything currently available.
CATL is confident that it will launch the Qilin battery and its third generation packs next year. and according to BloombergTwo Chinese electric vehicle brands have already announced vehicles that promise 620 miles per charge on battery.
Considering that CATL supplies automakers including Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW and more in the United States, we can expect more information soon.
