Ads are already common in the Apple app store, especially when searching for apps, but now Apple is preparing to launch ads in more sections of the app store.

Apple now allows app developers to set up a new type of advertising on the App Store, which appears on the main “Today” tab, alongside Apple’s app selections. They look like Apple’s existing highlights, except there’s an ‘Announcement’ indicator at the bottom. Apple is also running ads at the bottom of app listings, in the “You Might Also Like” section.

Apple told MacRumors in a statement: “Apple Search Ads provides opportunities for developers of all sizes to grow their business. Like our other ad offerings, these new ad placements are built on the same foundation: they will only contain content from the apps’ approved App Store product pages and adhere to the same rigorous privacy standards.”

Even if the ads respect your privacy, they will still be annoying, especially since the existing search ads stick around. Apple has been expanding ads on its devices for the past few years as it cracks down on third-party tracking, which has led to some antitrust lawsuits. Advertising revenue is becoming increasingly important to Apple as fewer people regularly upgrade their phones and computers: The company reported $19.60 billion in services revenue during the third quarter of 2022 (which includes money from ads), an increase of 12% from the same time last year.

Apple isn’t alone in ramping up advertising on its app store, either. In May, Microsoft began testing ads in search and other areas of the Microsoft Store on Windows.
