Yes, this video made our Pixel 7 reboot.
Google’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are great phones with a lot of love, but a strange new bug is wreaking havoc on devices when owners play a specific YouTube video.
According to several users on Reddit and verified with our Pixel 7 Pro, when you try to watch this random YouTube video, Pixel 7 phones completely crash, struggle for a second, and then reboot. It’s a weird problem, but hopefully Google can fix it.
Interestingly, the YouTube video causing problems is from the movie. aliens, random 4K HDR clips from the movie. If you try to watch it inside the YouTube app on a Pixel 7, it will likely brick your phone. And no, I do not recommend that you try it just for fun.
Certain users with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro reported a similar crash, while others said video plays just fine. My old Galaxy S21 Ultra easily handles video, so it seems to be a Pixel issue.
We’re not sure if this is an issue with the 4K HDR settings or something with the phone’s color space. I have tried other 4K HDR videos and have not experienced any further issues. For now, we don’t know what’s going on. Some users may remember a similar situation where a strange wallpaper locked Samsung phones.
This isn’t a huge problem for most Pixel 7 owners unless you’re trying to watch that exact video, but it could be a sign of a bigger problem that Google should fix in the next monthly software update. We will be attentive to more details.
