BMW’s i Vision Dee concept car now has 32 different colours.

A year ago, BMW showed off what it called the world’s first color-changing car at CES. The exterior of the iX Flow concept had e-ink panels that could switch between shades of black and grey. Now, just a year later, BMW’s latest concept can change the exterior to a rainbow of 32 different colors.

During BMW’s keynote at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show, BMW unveiled two fun new “i Vision Dee” concept cars. Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience, which shows a future where a car can respond to the owner’s mood or environment and change color instantly.

And while the clever color-changing trick stole the show, that’s not the only thing special about Dee. These concept sedans featured a host of technologies that could soon be in our vehicles, whether it’s an AI-powered virtual assistant that talks to you, or the entire windshield as a large display screen.

I’ve timed the video below so you can see Dee shifting through a full palette of colors with different body panels rapidly changing color on the fly. Even the wheels change color, which is pretty cool.

One version of the car replaced its traditional “grill” with a display, which still had typical headlights and grille designs, but then blinked its eyes and showed emotion. It was part of BMW’s larger concept where a car’s “user interface” could talk to you with an assistant, display emotions, and then match those emotions to the changing colors of the entire exterior.

BMW’s Concept Dee vehicle has more than 240 e-ink panels on the exterior, each capable of individual changes. As a result, the car can be a single color or transform into a rainbow of colors.

E Ink’s ultra-low power display technology shown here is similar to that of an Amazon Kindle, but obviously on a much larger scale. And while this is just a concept right now, the automaker did mention that this technology might be closer to production than you imagine.

The goal is to offer “spray” E-ink paint that could enhance the entire experience while also conforming to the contours of a vehicle. Who knows, maybe in a few years your all-electric SUV will have emotions or change color to suit the mood and vibe. We’ll have to wait and see.
