Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you can’t do anything and everything just feels stressful? Well, sometimes, that’s just stress and a bad brain day. But if you also live in a messy environment, your space may not be helping.

Fortunately, tidying up could help improve your mood by making you less stressed and more productive.

Dr. Libby Sander, assistant professor of organizational behavior at Bond University in Australia, spoke with TODAY and explained that excessive clutter can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. Sander told the outlet that brains love order, and if we’re surrounded by clutter and clutter, it can tax our brains’ cognitive function.

But it’s not just seeing things that causes you anxiety. Risa Williams, a California-based psychotherapist and management coach, spoke with Apartment Therapy and explained that you’ll also encounter decision fatigue. When you have so many things and so many options to choose from, choosing between your clothes, mugs, or shoes and having to make a decision about which one to wear or wear can be another added stressor.

So what does that mean for you? Well, tidying up probably won’t solve all your anxiety and stress problems. We won’t lie about that, but getting rid of some excess stuff and cleaning up an environment might help some people feel more relaxed and productive.

However, do you feel overwhelmed by cleanliness? Check out these expert tips for dealing with overwhelming disorganization and help yourself feel more relaxed in the new year.
