Do you want invitations to automatically appear in your Google Calendar but are wary of spam? Instead of blocking all events from appearing automatically, you have another option. You can show events only from people you know.

This addition to Google Calendar settings was announced in July 2022. So if you haven’t checked it out yet, now is the time!

How does it work

If you enable the option to automatically show events from people you know, this includes senders in your organization who use the same domain. It also includes those in your contact list and people you have interacted with in the past.

Once you activate the feature, you will continue to receive invitations from unknown senders. However, these events will not show up in Google Calendar until you accept them.

Options for adding invitations to Google Calendar

You can enable this setting on the Google Calendar website, as well as the mobile app on Android and iPhone.

Show invites from people you know on the web

To activate this setting on the web, visit Google Calendar in your browser and sign in. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner and select “Settings.”

Expand the General section on the left and choose “Event Settings.”

Select the dropdown box for Add invitations to my calendar and choose “Only if sender is known.”

You should see a pop-up letting you know that the change doesn’t affect invitations you’ve already received and that you’ll receive future email invitations from unknown senders.

Select “OK” to confirm the message and save the change.

To change this setting in the Google Calendar mobile app, you’ll need to follow the same process on Android and iPhone.

If you have more than one Google account in the Google Calendar app, follow the same process for each if you want.

You can then use the arrow at the top left to exit settings and return to the main Google Calendar screen.

It may be convenient for you to automatically add invitations to your Google Calendar, but you have disabled the option due to unknown senders. With the improved setup, you can see those events again, but only from people you know.
