Tired of receiving robocalls all day on your iPhone? Your iPhone allows you to silence harassment by turning on a feature called “Mute Unknown Callers” in Settings. Here’s how to do it.
What is an unknown caller?
On your iPhone, an “unknown caller” is someone who isn’t in your contact list, which is an address book stored on your device that can be accessed through the Phone or Contacts apps. If you’ve called a number recently, your iPhone won’t treat that number as an “unknown call” if they call you back.
Apple includes a feature with iOS 13 and later that allows you to silence ringtones and notifications from unknown people, which we’ll cover next. This does not include numbers you have recently called. Otherwise, if you want a caller to not be considered “unknown” (and therefore not silenced), you’ll need to add the number to your iPhone’s contact list.

How to silence unwanted calls from strangers on iPhone
To silence unwanted calls, start by opening Settings on your iPhone. You can launch it by tapping the gray gear icon on your iPhone’s home screen.
In Settings, scroll down and tap “Phone”.
In the phone settings, tap “Mute unknown calls”.
In the Mute Unknown Callers settings, toggle the switch next to “Mute Unknown Callers” to “On.”
The next time you receive a call from an unknown number, you will not hear a ring or notification sound. The call will be sent to voicemail and will appear in the recent calls list in the Phone app. You can still get notified if the caller leaves a voicemail.
If you expect an important call from an unknown number in the future, open Settings and revisit Phone > Mute Unknown Callers, and then switch “Mute Unknown Callers” to “Off”. Incoming calls will no longer be silenced. Good luck!
