ProtonVPN and ProtonMail are two of the most popular online privacy tools, and the company behind them has been working to unify the two products. The price is also changing slightly.
Proton launched its new proton.me domain last month as a shorter alternative to protonmail.com, and the company was already allowing customers to reserve their email address on the new domain. Soon, Proton will start moving its services (except the VPN, for now) to the new site. The company said in a blog post, “As the number of Proton services grows, unification under a single domain name is also becoming more important.” However, ProtonMail customers will continue to receive mail from any old address.
New pricing is also being rolled out, though it appears to only affect ProtonVPN, at least for now. The base version of ProtonVPN with 500+ servers and two simultaneous connections is now $5 per month instead of $4, while the Plus package with higher speeds and 10 connections has increased from $8 to $10. The ‘Visionary’ option, which includes all VPN and Mail features, is still $30/month.
No one likes higher prices, but a $1-2 increase on the most popular plans isn’t too bad, and both services still offer free plans with limited features. Proton says it’s not raising prices for existing customers and “all plans will be upgraded to provide more storage and features for our existing subscribers.” ProtonVPN and ProtonMail also have free tiers available with limited features, and Proton offers lower prices for annual billing (plus occasional promotional offers).
Finally, Proton is planning a revamped design for all of its services, complete with new logos. ProtonMail received a makeover for the last time in June 2021.
