If you love grinding your own coffee, you probably already know that you need to clean your grinder. But it can be a real pain in the ass, so you might be tempted to resort to cleaning tricks. One specifically suggests throwing rice into your coffee grinder, but does it work?
While this method may seem like a quick fix for cleaning a coffee grinder, it can actually be detrimental to the longevity and effectiveness of your coffee grinder.
Now, if you have a blade grinder, you’re in luck because rice can be used to clean it (although be careful, as it’s not exactly a manufacturer-approved cleaning method). But for those with a coffee grinder, leave the rice.
The problem is that rice is much harder than coffee beans and a burred grinder is not designed to handle it. Forcing your burr grinder to chew rice can result in chipped and broken burrs, giving you uneven grinds and poor overall performance. Also, doing so can damage the motor or starchy rice could clog it. Neither of these scenarios is great.
If you want to clean your grinder of burrs, try using a soft cleaning brush or soft cloth to clean the grinder and burrs. You can also use compressed air to get into tight spaces. However, the number one rule is not to use water. Humidity can disrupt your routine.
If your burr grinder seems to be less effective lately, it might be time to clean it.
