In just a few years Roblox has taken the gaming world by storm. A platform seemingly out of nowhere, it currently has over 40 million daily active users. It is also home to nearly 10 million developers.
Looking at those numbers, one can’t help but wonder. Where does all this come from? How did it start and what was the first game on Roblox?
In this article, I will go over the history of Roblox. I will also walk you through its evolution to the product we know today.
Let’s start.
what is roblox
One thing we need to get out of the way: Roblox itself is not a game. It’s more like a gaming metaverse: an app that hosts various games and allows people to connect and play with strangers. It also has a showcase. Your in-app currency, Robux, can be used to obtain various goods and services in games on the platform.
Roblox’s official creation date is September 1, 2006. Despite that, it didn’t really reach mainstream popularity until the late 2010s. And it really exploded during the Covid lockdown.
The reason for this probably lies in the social experience it offers. After registering, the first thing you need to do is create your personal avatar. So you use it to go out into the digital world and create, imagine, play and socialize with millions of people. It’s easy to see why this was appealing to a world hungry for social contact.
However, what makes the platform truly unique is its user-generated library. The app hosts 50 million games of all genres: survival, simulation, action, adventure, etc. And the vast majority of them were made by regular users.
And to top it off, Roblox is completely free and available on most platforms and operating systems. The gaming industry is huge and people play games on all kinds of devices. Roblox manages to hit most of the top notes – it’s available on Windows, Mac, Xbox, and even Android and iOS.
It’s a huge project, and we’re going back to its roots. Let’s take a look at the first Roblox game.
What was the first game on Roblox?
The first player experience of Roblox was quite different from what we know today. There were far fewer games to choose from. There was no Robux yet and many QoL features (such as chat) were still missing.
The first Roblox game Classic Era: Rocket Arena. It dates back to January 2006, when the platform was still in its Beta phase.
Rocket Arena was a free to play Brickbattle game with a destructible environment. The game was based on throwing a rocket launcher at your opponents. You can also use it to blow up your environment, such as blowing down bridges to isolate other players. In the end, you got yourself a pair of Jet Boots to give you some mobility.
The title was very popular and even inspired many other similar games. In 2015, however, an update caused Jet Boots to stop working. With the core game mechanics gone, the game slowly fell into obscurity. In 2017, Roblox unlocked it so users could try to recreate the experience.
However, to date, the first Roblox game in its original form is unplayable.
Other ancient games IN Roblox
When it comes to old Roblox titles, we shouldn’t just focus on the old ones. There are many other titles that deserve recognition. Most of them were made by the Roblox team itself and many are no longer available.
Here is a list of the top 9 classic Roblox games from the early days of the platform:
experience gravity
Amanda’s Experience Gravity has an interesting misinformation about its release date. What better candidate to start with, right?
You will find some sources claiming that it is the oldest Roblox game still available on the platform. And if you visit his Roblox page, this is the box. The title appears as created on 11/21/2006.
However, when I dug a little deeper, I discovered that the game was created on 10/09/2018. The creator, Amanda, posted a post on Reddit explaining how she used one of the first slots from years ago, accidentally distorting the release date.
Experience Gravity has a simple and relaxing premise. You start at a base, and if you jump down the right way, you’ll be launched into space. You can go out and circle around the planets, well, until you make a mistake and crash into the sun.
The game is known for its large number of badges, many of which are quite amusing. Most are related to the number of times you die.
chaos cannon
Another one of the classics, Chaos Canyon, came out in 2007. It was a Brickbattle shooter with no real objectives – you usually ended up on a free-for-all map.
Since its release, the title has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. Unfortunately, like other older games, it is no longer available in 2017.
Base Wars First Person Shooter
This is a bit different. As the name suggests, Base Wars FPS is the first official first-person shooter in Roblox history.
The game featured several playable classes:
- Soldier
- Tank
- Assault
- Sniper
- Curator
The FPS was created on April 24, 2007 and has accumulated more than 770,000 visits since then.
It’s also playable! However, it hasn’t been updated since 2014, so don’t wait. However, it is copyblock-free and anyone can copy and improve it.
Classic: Crossroads
Crossroads is probably the most popular of the old Roblox games. It was created in 2006 and has been played a whopping 7 million times since then.
It’s also the only classic to survive the cleanup of old titles in 2017. It was removed for a while, but returned with improved graphics and is still playable today.
Santa’s Winter Fortress
Santa’s Winter Stronghold was the first Roblox game with a holiday theme. It aired a week before Christmas 2006.
In game terms, you could be playing as Santa Claus or one of his elves. You’d get points for collecting gifts or defeating your opponents (cheerful, right?).
Like most games from that period, Winter Keep is no longer playable.
Air Base Sector 128A
This was more of a showcase than an actual game.
Air Base Sector 128A included a military air base. It contained two cannon towers, a watchtower, and barracks dormitories. It was pretty small, which is in line with most old Roblox maps.
The experience was mentioned in a blog post in December 2006, which resulted in most of its 20,000 views.
sunset plain
This was one of the first experiences of Brickbattle, a very popular genre among classic Roblox games.
Sunset Plain was created in November 2006. It was featured in an issue of the platform’s online Developer’s Journal, giving it a glorious moment of fame.
Although the game itself hasn’t been updated since then, you may still be able to play it. Super Nostalgia Zone by CloneTrooper1019 It made some older titles playable again, and this is one of them.
Yorick’s resting place
Another Christmas addition, Yorick’s was a celebration of Halloween. Although it was created in 2006, the special event took place on Halloween 2008.
The game required players to beat 4 puzzles and you were rewarded with a special Riddleling Skull hat.
Today the game is no longer playable. Removed copyblock, meaning there may be other versions, but the Enigmatic Skull Hat has been disabled. If you wish, you will have to exchange it with another user.
Forest of Desolation (Place of the Abyss)
Yet another example of a showcase rather than a game, the Forest features a ruined tower surrounded by autumn trees.
Like most older Roblox titles, it has been out of date for a while and is no longer playable. The interesting thing is that it was the first experience created by a player instead of the Roblox team. After its creator, Abyss, was banned from the platform, the name of the game changed to Abyss’s Place.
To wrap
As you can see, Roblox has really changed over the years. If you were wondering what was the first game on Roblox, you have your answer. I hope you also enjoyed some of the other classic titles I mentioned.
Unfortunately, most of these games are no longer available, but some are still there for you to enjoy. If you’re wondering what to play while you wait for this year’s big releases, Roblox has you covered!
