If you’re having problems with your Apple TV, for example if it’s unresponsive or has errors, it’s a good idea to hard reset the device, which can fix many problems. Here’s how to do it.

Reboot in settings menu

If your Apple TV is crashing, it’s easy to restart it, just like restarting a computer, using the Settings app that comes built-in with tvOS (Apple TV’s operating system). First, locate the Settings app on your home screen (with a gray gear icon). In Settings, select “System”, then choose “Restart”.

On older Apple TV models, select Settings > General > Restart instead. After that, your Apple TV screen will go black for a while, then you will see an Apple logo when the unit reboots. The process may take a few minutes.

Reboot by disconnecting

As with many computer-controlled devices that don’t have power switches, it sometimes needs to be completely unplugged from the power outlet for it to reboot, forcing the operating system to reload and update itself (without losing any settings).

To do this with Apple TV, locate your Apple TV box and follow the AC power cord to the outlet. Unplug the power cord from the outlet and wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in. After a while, if everything works fine, you will see an Apple logo on your TV screen when the Apple TV starts to start up again.

If you’ve restarted and are still having issues with your Apple TV, contact Apple for support. Good luck!
