Tesla has a lot of fun with the hidden features in its vehicles. Allowing owners to turn the car into a light show, romance mode, or even make fart noises. Now, it looks like Ford wants in on the fun, filing a new patent to allow owners to remotely throttle the engine.

Imagine using your key fob or a mobile app to rev up your engine, even when you’re not in the car. It sounds weird, but it could be a fun party trick for enthusiasts at car meet-ups, car shows, and other events. Or, you know, to scare the neighbor kids.

According to a patent application spotted by the enthusiast forum 7th mustang, that’s exactly what could be coming soon. While the patent filing dates back to 2020, Ford officially published the patent on May 5, 2022.

Ford Engine Remote Revs Patent

After reading the report, Ford explains that the technology would allow owners to throttle the engine using a “user-operated input device” and that the engine could be activated “at various distances from the vehicle” without stepping on the accelerator.

The patent then explains how to allow owners to start the engine, throttle it for a selected period of time, or even throttle in custom patterns and at different RPMs to create musical notes. Fuel economy and gas prices are a big concern these days, but you might as well spend some gas playing a song with your engine for some friends.

It seems that Ford is not only thinking about gasoline vehicles. The patent specifically mentions pre-recorded motor noises for electric vehicles or even remote controlled “flux capacitor” sounds. I think it would be amazing to hear the engine revving and roaring to hear an unlocking noise as you walk to the vehicle and use the key fob.

It’s worth noting that Ford has recently filed several patents, including a drift mode, pet mode, remote parking, and other things to keep up with Tesla and Rivian. For example, Tesla had a “boombox mode” that allowed owners to play music outside the car, but it was recently removed as part of a software recall.

Just because Ford has patented a remote throttle option doesn’t mean it’s coming anytime soon, but it sure sounds like fun.
