Surely, you have heard more than someone who says that there are no great differences between an ordinary laptop with a gamer, more than the price and design. Well, certainly, these aspects are the first that you can notice, but what really sets them apart is their internal content. And in that aspect, we will stop to deepen.

The most important

  • The laptops gamer are, at first glance, like any other computer. However, they have the particularity that they have been manufactured with the focus of offering an extraordinary gaming experience to the user. This is the reason for its name.
  • Buying a  gamer laptop is not an easy task, much less cheap. Therefore, you need to be clear about what you are looking for and above all, have informed yourself. The first thing that will help you get a clear idea is to set your maximum budget. This will limit your options and therefore make it easier for you to choose a model.
  • It is important to make a comparison between desktop gaming and laptop gamer. Both devices have been manufactured to great specifications, capable of withstanding the heavy and demanding use of running software, games, and/or emulators.
  • As the internal content is the most important thing in these teams, there are many factors and purchase criteria that you should know. The most important are the technical aspects, such as the graphics card and its GPU, RAM, processors, storage capacity, type of storage, and other elements such as the size of the screen, the keyboard, and the materials used.

Shopping guide: What you need to know about  gamer laptops

As we mentioned, buying one of these devices is not easy, since it requires a lot of knowledge on the subject and, above all, very technical aspects, very different from when you buy a  common laptop. That is why, in this section, we will answer the most frequent and important questions asked by online users.

What are  gamer laptops ?

It is difficult to find a perfect definition that can answer what gamer laptops are since the settings can be similar to that of a  common laptop. However, you can notice at least 3 features with the naked eye, such as its robust size, its ventilation system, and its keyboards. But inside they change, and a lot.

That said, we can define these devices by their characteristics because they differ from the others by having great specifications. Above all, in potential and in the use of technologies, whose objective is to achieve the best performance in the execution, not only of games and emulators but also of all kinds of audiovisual content in general.

This is achieved through various aspects such as high-resolution graphics, utilities that offer better network connections, the best GPUs (graphics cards), high-power processors, large storage capacities, and highly efficient cooling systems, accompanied by materials that dissipate heat, and high-quality keyboards.

Did you know that in 1971 Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney were the creators of the first machine in history? The game was called Computer Space, where the player controlled a space rocket.

Is it worth investing in a gaming laptop  even if you are not going to play?

Gaming laptops are very expensive machines, in addition to being powerful and strong, intended mainly for heavy or demanding uses. However, the fact that its focus is the gamer public, does not mean that only this group can take advantage of it. Remember that due to their characteristics, these devices are suitable for everything.

There are many ways to get the most out of these laptops, even without being a gamer, such as semi or professional uses for the image or video editing.

Therefore, if you are a content creator, engineer, architect, or designer, one of these devices may be very useful to you, since it perfectly executes the programs that these professionals use.

However, if you do not plan to use them for gaming, and you do not need to run design, editing, or content creation programs, we do not recommend purchasing one of these laptops. Not only for the fact of not being able to take full advantage of its features but mainly for the high cost they have.

Is a laptop gamer better than a desktop gamer computer?

The most radical gamers will say that laptop and gaming is a combination of words that does not make any sense. In this article, we will not try to convince you that gamer laptops are better than desktop ones because, ultimately, and in a strict sense, they can never be overcome.

This is due to their very nature, that is, the space they occupy and the portability they generate. At the same time, these are the aspects that for some may represent a greater advantage, but of course, it will depend on what you need. If you need portability and move quickly from one place to another, a laptop will suit you.

A  gamer laptop will not be able to perform tasks with the same power as a desktop one, so naturally, it will never be able to match or exceed its performance. However, it is useless to have a “beast” on your desk, if you need to go from one place to another.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a laptop gamer versus a desktop gamer computer?

The market has seen a very accelerated rise in the sale of gaming laptops. This fact has led many applicants and veterans to wonder if it really is worth it or even a better option. The truth is that manufacturers have been betting and reducing the differences, although naturally, they are still significant. Here we mention some:

AdvantageDisadvantages
laptops  gamerIt gives you greater portability. You get more lightness. You have all its components in one device. They heat up more than desktop ones. They have up to 25% less powerful processors. They can only be increased RAM and storage. They have little margin for overclocking the CPU.Its screens are limited from 13 to 18 inches.
Computer gaming  desktopIt offers you various price options depending on the components you purchase. They heat less (their fans are more efficient). They have up to 25% more powerful processors. Its capacity for improvement is quite extensive. They present greater capacity of overcklocking to the CPU.You get more and better sound options. Its screens are much larger. You have no portability. The weight of all its components is greater. Each component must be purchased separately.

As you can see, the advantages of a desktop “computer” in terms of performance, price, and room for improvement are much greater. It is a logical consequence of the size of each of these. However, for many people who must move frequently from one place to another, portability is an aspect that for practical and necessary reasons takes precedence over others.

In one way or another, the fact of buying a  gaming laptop does not mean that you are buying an extremely inferior device since as we mentioned previously, these computers have been manufactured to work in the most demanding conditions. Just be aware of the limitations and, above all, the price.

What are some of the characteristics that make a  laptop gamer  different from the traditional ones?

Although the differences between these two teams are more than obvious, it is also worth making a distinction between the two. At first, we could say that a laptop gamer is a much more superior version than an ordinary laptop. While traditional laptops withstand moderate use, gamers are built for demanding use.

  • The  laptops gamer  have very sophisticated designs. Just by looking at them, you know that this is a special device.
  • as  laptops  gamer  have cooling systems specially designed and high speed fans. With this, they achieve efficient operation and avoid overheating due to the demands of the tasks to which they are subjected.
  • They have high-end dedicated graphics cards, while ordinary laptops have integrated graphics cards.
  • The  laptops gamer  are integrated with special keyboards that feature LED lighting in some cases, configurable, and displays high quality. Some even with mechanical keyboards.
  • High-power consumption in terms of processors, being more powerful and containing a higher speed than ordinary computer processors.
  • The  laptops gamer  also have a higher RAM capacity of storage and a VRAM (dedicated only for videos).
  • Due to the high power consumption required by the processors , the battery of gaming laptops lasts less than the battery of a  traditional laptop . In some cases, it is necessary to have one or up to 2 external batteries.

We can continue naming many more aspects, but ultimately we can affirm that a  gamer laptop  surpasses in all respects a normal one, be it in size, capacity, speed and power. The only aspect it lags behind is the battery life, for obvious reasons, due to the level of demands it is subjected to.

Purchase Criteria

There are many details, aspects, features and benefits that you should know about  gamer laptops , remember that you are not investing a few dollars. The components with which a laptop is manufactured will define the level of operation it will have under the most demanding conditions. Take into account the following aspects:

  • GPU and graphics card
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Storage capacity and type
  • screen
  • Frame rate
  • Panel type and refresh rate
  • Resolution
  • Keyboard and trackpad
  • Portability

GPU and graphics card

The GPU (graphics processing unit) refers precisely to the core found inside the graphics card . So it is important not to confuse or use both terms interchangeably, as it is not correct. The GPU is typically located on plug-in cards, on a chipset on the motherboard, or on the same CPU chip .

This component is perhaps the most important within a gamer computer , since the main function of this unit is to perform all the mathematical calculations necessary to reproduce images on the screen. The more sophisticated they are, the higher the resolution, speed and fluidity in game images, videos or movies.

The most used graphics cards are Nvidia. So we recommend that you have at least one Nvidia GEFORCE of the GTX 10 series to play. Recently, they have launched their new GTX 16 series, which is logically more powerful. They also have the GTX 20 series, being this the most powerful on the market, with a high price.

Processor

Processors for gamer laptops are practically called by the manufacturer Intel. This does not mean that another manufacturer like AMD is bad but very rarely do they have these processors (the same thing happens with graphics cards). Otherwise for desktop computers that do have very good AMD components.

That said, we will talk about Intel and its high-end Core processors, currently ninth generation. We recommend that the minimum be at least seventh or eighth generation and, ideally, start with an Intel Core i5 processor. If you choose the latest generation, the i5-9400F and i5-9600K 6 cores and 6 threads, respectively, it will suit you a lot.

Of course, if you’re on a bigger budget, an 8-core 8-core Intel Core i7-9700K processor or a 6-core 12-core i7-9750H will work just fine. The latest in power is the 8-core, 16-core Intel Core i9-9900K. An example is the new Alienware Area 51, officially launched in February 2019.

RAM

We already know that RAM is the main memory of a computer, where all data and programs are stored. Therefore, in terms of RAM, there is not much to lose, since depending on the number of demanding tasks that the computer will undergo, it must have a decent amount or more.

We do not recommend a  laptop with less than 8GB of RAM and at least 2GB of VRAM since with this capacity, your computer will have the minimum to play smoothly, but we do not assure you that you can demand the execution of more simultaneous or multithreading tasks. Remember that playing is one of the most demanding tasks a computer does.

Therefore, having 16GB or 32GB of RAM would be ideal, since with this capacity your laptop will be equipped with enough power to run several threads at the same time. However, don’t worry if it only has 8GB, since RAM is one of the easiest things to expand and doesn’t generate such a high cost.

Storage capacity and type

In this criterion, it will always be better to have more, and, currently, the vast majority of models are marketed with 1,000 GB (1 TB) of storage. This amount would be appropriate, but you can also find models with 256 GB or 512 GB. In this case, the minimum would be 512 GB, so that later you can increase the memory, but do not settle for less than that.

Regarding the type of storage, it will be best to have combined storage between an SSD of at least 256GB and another HDD of at least 7,200 rpm. The SSD is used for booting, making it faster, while the HDD is for storage. The most accessible models only have an HDD. Although, as you know, it can be expanded in some models.

screen

The screen is another component that directly affects the quality with which we can play. The ideal sizes for gaming or content editing and creation are  15.6 and 17.3 screen laptops. Sure you can find smaller sizes, but do you really want to limit your gaming experience?

Therefore, we recommend that the minimum size is 15.6 and a maximum of 17.3. There are models with size 18.3, but we think it is too big. Remember that the screen size must be proportional to the size of the computer. It will be up to you if you want to sacrifice a little size for lightness. We are left with 17.3, without a doubt.

Did you know that the best-selling game in history is Pac Man? It was launched by the Namco company in 1982.

Frame rate

The image frequency is measured in hertz (Hz), which we could say represent the cycles per second of the image. To understand how hertz works, you need to know frames per second (fps). Basically one frame and one hertz equal one frame per second, that is, a single image.

When it comes to the image, it is intimately linked to the screen, and it is that in the market, we can find, today, screens with frequencies of 60 Hz, 120 Hz, and 144 Hz in their vast majority. However, there are already manufacturers that have launched notebook computers with screens that have a frequency of 240 Hz, of course, much more expensive than the others.

Our recommendation is that you buy a laptop with a minimum of 120 Hz or 144 Hz if you have a little more budget. And, if money is not a limit for you, then buy a 240 Hz one, although the two previous frequencies work very well too. The 60 Hz frequency isn’t that bad, but it’s a difference.

Panel type and refresh rate

Another question that is directly related to the topic of the screen and that many users face when choosing their laptop. We can basically say that there are 4 types of panels: TN, IPS, VA, and PLS panels. We will only focus on the first two since they are the most used.

Again, it will depend a lot on the intended use you plan to give these devices. However, TN panels are the least expensive to manufacture and that makes them the most popular. They are ideal for those who want to give exclusive use to games due to the fact that they have very low refresh rates, up to 1 millisecond (ms).

On the other hand, IPS panels are the most recommended when you want to edit images and multimedia content since they reflect colors in a more faithful way. They are also much more expensive than TNs and the refresh rates are around 4 and 5 milliseconds (ms), taking the most expensive and sophisticated models up to 3 ms.

Did you know that the first portable console in history is the MicroVision?

Resolution

This is another question that many users ask themselves, what resolution works best for them, 1,080P or 4K? Some even let themselves be carried away by the latest innovation in the image, which is 4K, considering that it is the best. The answer to this question will necessarily depend on the use that you will give to your equipment.

If you need a  laptop only to play, a screen with a resolution of 1,080 P will suffice, and you can buy one with 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or even 240 Hz. The 4K currently only reaches 60 Hz, in addition to a 1,080 P, you will consume less battery. 4K is recommended for content editing and creation since you will have more details on the screen.

Keyboard and trackpad

The keyboard is one of the most important components of gaming laptops, remember that it works as a control pad and each key will have a function. In the vast majority of gaming laptops, we find membrane keyboards, which in the long run will not withstand being continuous and strongly pressed for a long time.

The best option is mechanical keyboards, like the ones you would have with a desktop gamer computer. Unfortunately, there are still not many models available that include this type of keyboard. However, some manufacturers, especially in their more sophisticated models, have begun to resort to them.

As for the trackpad, no further research is required to know that it is not in itself the most comfortable to work with, much less to play. Therefore, our recommendation is that you get a mouse gamer, as it will be more comfortable and suitable.

Portability

This criterion is related to the weight of the laptop and, therefore, will depend on how comfortable you feel with one weight or another. As all the aspects and components are related to each other, you should keep in mind that the size and weight will directly influence the capacity of the laptop. The greater the weight and size, the greater the capacity, and the lighter and more compact, the less capacity.

The laptops gaming will always be much heavier and stronger than a  laptop traditional, can weigh just over 4 kg. We believe that the medium is always a good parameter and with a 2 to 3 kg laptop, you will have a good team, in addition to not being so uncomfortable to take with you.

Summary

The gamer world is not easy to master, it is not as easy as going to a store to see normal laptops and being able to make a decision right there and go out with one of these devices. These teams require a lot of information and research in this regard, knowing the components that make them up and the capabilities they offer.

It is worth mentioning again that these do not exceed, in terms of capacity and performance, a desktop computer. Much will depend on the intended use that you plan to give them since based on this, some components and features will suit you more in one way than the other.

Our wish is that you have been able to learn more about these great teams and that you have been able to solve each of your questions. To finish, we invite you to share your opinions or suggestions in this regard, as this will help us to always give you the best. Remember that our priority is you!
