How to convert a Google document to PDF

Google Docs makes it easy to download your documents in various formats, including PDF. You can convert your documents to PDF on your desktop and Android phone. We will show you how to do it.

Note: As of the May 2022 write-up, Google Docs for iPhone and iPad does not allow you to save your documents in PDF format.

Save a Google Document as a PDF on desktop

  1. Open Google Doc in a browser.
  2. Click File > Download > PDF Document.
  3. Choose a location and name for the file and click “Save.”

On your Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook computer, use the Google Docs website to convert your documents to PDF.

To get started, open your preferred web browser and launch Google Docs. Sign in to your account on the site, then click on the document you want to save as a PDF.

When the document opens, from the Google Docs menu bar, select File > Download > PDF Document.

Your computer’s standard “save as” window will open. Here, choose the folder to save your PDF to, optionally enter a name for the file and click “Save”.

And everything is ready. The PDF version of your chosen Google Doc is now available in your specified folder.

Convert a Google Document to a PDF on Android

On your Android phone, use the free Google Docs app to convert your documents to PDF format.

To get started, launch the Google Docs app on your phone. Then select the document you want to save as a PDF.

On the document screen, in the upper right corner, tap on the three dots.

In the three-dot menu, select “Share and Export”.

In the “Share and Export” menu, tap “Save As”.

You will see a “Save As” menu that lists the formats in which you can download your document. Here, choose “PDF Document” and tap “OK”.

The PDF preview of your document will open. To save this PDF file, at the top of the preview, select the download icon (an arrow pointing down).

Your PDF will download and you will find it in the Downloads folder on your phone.

And that’s how you make your Google Docs accessible on many more devices!
