Gmail folders (also known as labels) allow you to collect relevant emails. If you don’t need one or more of these folders, it’s easy to remove them from the web, iPhone, and iPad versions of Gmail. We’ll show you how to do just that.

Note: As of the May 2022 write-up, the Gmail Android app does not allow you to delete folders (labels). You will need to use a PC, iPhone, or iPad.

What You Should Know Before Deleting Gmail Folders

When you delete a folder, Gmail deletes that folder, but all emails that were in that folder remain. Know that once you delete a folder, you can’t restore it, but you can create a new folder from scratch if you want.

Before you start the folder deletion process, if you want to delete all the emails found in that folder, first find and delete all those emails. Then proceed to the section below to delete the folder itself.

Delete a folder (label) from the web version of Gmail

On your desktop computer, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook, use the Gmail website to delete your email folders.

To get started, launch a web browser on your computer and open Gmail. Sign in to your account if you haven’t already.

On the main interface of Gmail, in the sidebar on the left, find the folder you want to delete. Then hover over that folder and click on the three dots.

Advice: If you don’t see the folder you want to delete, at the bottom of your folder list, click “More” to see all available folders.

Select the three dots next to a folder.

In the menu that opens after clicking on the three dots, choose “Remove Tag”.

In the “Remove Tag” message, click “Remove”.

Select

And that is. Gmail will delete the selected folder from your account, but remember that the emails that were in that folder still exist in your account if you didn’t delete them manually.
