To remove duplicate contacts on iPhone, open the “Contacts” app and use the “View Duplicates” option. You can merge contacts one by one or all at once.

It’s easy for the contacts on your iPhone or iPad to get disorganized. Fortunately, there are several ways to deal with messy contacts, especially annoying duplicates. We’ll show you how to merge duplicate contacts or remove duplicates altogether.

Duplicate contacts are especially a problem if you bring contacts from multiple sources, like Google and iCloud. Instead of people from both lists appearing twice, you can find duplicate contacts and merge them. Or maybe you just want to keep one of them. Let’s do it.

Apple didn’t always include a tool to merge duplicate contacts. Fortunately, the functionality is now integrated into the Contacts app as of iOS 16. It’s not perfect, but it should catch most duplicates.

First, open the “Contacts” app on your iPhone or iPad.

tap the app "Contacts".

Next, go to “All Contacts” if it’s not already there.

select "all contacts".

If duplicates have been found, you will see a card at the top of the screen. Tap “View Duplicates.”

Select "see duplicates".

Select the contact you want to merge or tap “Merge All” to merge them all at once.

Select a contact or "combine everything".

If you select an individual contact, you’ll see where the duplicates are pulled from. In this case, I have the same contact listed twice from my synced Google account. It also shows what information will be merged. Tap “Merge.”

touch "Combine".

Then select “Merge” in the pop-up window to confirm.

Choose "Fuse".

That’s all about it! Apple’s built-in feature is pretty good if you don’t have a lot of contacts to filter.

Apple’s contact merge tool is decent, but it doesn’t always detect duplicates. You may want to use a third-party app to get the job done. We like a free app called “Easy Cleaner” – it has over 24,000 reviews and a rating of almost five stars.

First, open the app and give it permission to access your contacts. Tap “Continue” and then “OK.”

touch "Continue" and "Accept".

Next, the app has a feature called “Contacts Enrichment”. You do not need to enable this for our purposes.

Contact enrichment is optional.

Now we are in the main interface of the application. Tap “Duplicate Contacts.”

Select "duplicate contacts".

Select the contact you want to merge.

Select a contact.

Here you will see the information that will be combined. Next, tap “Merge” or “Merge All Duplicates” if you want to do them all at once.

Choose "Fuse".

Are you ready! This tool works a little better than Apple’s built-in feature in the Contacts app.

What if you only want to delete a contact, not merge it? That’s very easy to do from the Contacts app. Just find the contact you want to delete and press and hold.

Touch and hold a contact from the list.

In the menu, select “Delete Contact”.

Select "Delete contact".

Easy peasy!

Deleting multiple contacts is a bit more complicated. Apple does not allow you to select multiple contacts. You can tap with two fingers and drag to highlight, but that’s not great for selecting at will. For that, we will use a free application called “Easy Cleaner”.

First, open the app and give it permission to access your contacts. Tap “Continue” and then “OK.”

touch "Continue" and "Accept".

Select “All Contacts” at the top of the screen.

Touch and hold a contact to select it, then select other contacts to delete.

Touch and hold contact, then select more.

With all the contacts you want to delete highlighted, tap the trash can icon in the bottom right corner.

Confirm by selecting “Delete”.

touch "Eliminate" to confirm.

That’s all! This is a much better way to delete multiple contacts at once.

Another easy way to clean up your contact list is to disable the lists associated with your email accounts. Not all of these contacts are useful, so consider ordering them.

You can do this by going to Settings > Contacts > Accounts. Then, tap on the account in question and turn off “Contacts”.

Disable contacts functionality for a Gmail account

When you do this, all contacts associated with that account will be removed from your phone. However, they will remain on the server you downloaded them from, such as Google Contacts.

Contact management is something that most of us probably don’t do very often. Fortunately, phones have gotten a lot better at helping us with this task. It is easy to merge duplicate contacts on Android device. With Apple Photos, you can also find and remove duplicate photos and videos.
