If you use Hulu to watch your local live TV stations, you might notice a channel is missing this week. This is because the broadcaster unexpectedly lost the rights to broadcast content from the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns numerous local ABC affiliates in the United States.

Although the company has not issued an official statement on the matter, it has been responding to inquiries about the missing ABC affiliates. In a repeat today, Hulu Support tweeted: “Sinclair owns multiple ABC affiliates across the country and as of March 8, Hulu no longer has the rights to distribute those channels.”

While there’s no definitive list of local stations that have left Hulu, Sinclair’s website lists 40 stations in the United States that it owns that are ABC affiliates.

However, while local stations may be gone, they may return as Hulu, ABC (and parent company Disney), and Sinclair continue to negotiate broadcast rights. Plus, much of ABC’s content is still available through the streaming giant.

It’s also worth noting that you can still get these channels for free on your TV. The stations still broadcast over the air in the cities where they operate. All you need to do is buy a TV antenna. They’re inexpensive and provide a great backup for cases like this, and they’re also great for when the internet goes out.
