When it comes to pumping gas, most of us are fixated on the ever-increasing cost on the screen as we pump. To distract you from that, you may have scrolled through your phone at the gas pump. But is that dangerous?
If you’ve ever heard that you shouldn’t be on your phone while gassing up, you might be surprised to learn that this advice is legitimate, but there’s something surprising about it.
Ultimately, should you be on your cell phone while gassing up? According to Michael Marando, staff liaison for the National Fire Protection Association, who spoke to USA Today, it’s probably not the best option. This old advice is true, but surprisingly, he explained that the risks are extremely low, much lower than he might have thought before.
Marando told him USA Today The warning is based on the idea that a cell phone could have enough energy to create a spark, and if mixed with gasoline, it could start a fire. However, with that being said, multiple agencies and even the cast of the beloved series Myth Busters have put this theory to the test. The result? Nothing, no explosion or fire has been started under experimental conditions.
However, that doesn’t mean you should start chatting while pumping gas. Just because the risk hasn’t been recreated doesn’t mean it’s not there. If you’re between two minutes without your cell phone or a gas fire, you should probably leave your cell phone in the car.
