Starting February 27, Microsoft Authenticator will apply its number matching system to improve protection against phishing. But this system has never worked on smartwatches, so naturally Microsoft has ended Authenticator support for the Apple Watch.

Previously, Microsoft Authenticator gave users the option to approve sign-in requests from their Apple Watch. But the number matching system requires you to enter a code from your computer screen into your authenticator device. This verification method provides greater security, but requires a reasonably large screen for a numeric keypad, which smartwatches lack.

“Number matching is a key security update to traditional second-factor claims in Microsoft Authenticator. We will remove admin controls and enforce the tenant-wide number matching experience for all users starting February 27, 2023.”

This is inconvenient for many users, especially those who must use Microsoft Authenticator for work. While people can always switch to a different MFA system, companies that have already invested in Azure will likely stick with Authenticator.

I must reiterate that Microsoft is enforcing this number matching system for all users. System administrators can’t go back to the old way of doing things, and the Apple Watch app is dead. With that being said, users can still receive authentication alerts on their Apple Watch.

Still, there is hope. Major technology leaders, including Microsoft, are now developing access key verification systems that are more secure and easier to use than existing code or number matching MFA methods. The rise of this technology could make Authenticator a viable application for smartwatches.
