In a big change for sports streaming, NFL Sunday Ticket is officially heading to YouTube and YouTube TV starting with the 2023 NFL season. It will no longer be available on DirecTV, which has offered the package since 1994.

After months of negotiations, we learned earlier this week that Google’s YouTube and streaming service YouTube TV were the frontrunners. Now, less than 24 hours later, it’s official.

Starting next year’s 2023-2024 season, NFL Sunday Ticket will be available to YouTube TV subscribers or on demand on the old regular YouTube. Google recently launched “YouTube Primetime Channels” as add-ons for EPIX, Paramount+, and other big channels, and now it’s adding the NFL Sunday Ticket to its list.

Essentially, any of the more than 5 million YouTube TV subscribers and 2 billion monthly Google users on YouTube can pay to add the coveted NFL Sunday Ticket. Then, stream NFL games from all your favorite teams.

With Sunday Ticket, fans can watch every Sunday afternoon match, regardless of channel or region. This includes preseason and playoffs. It’s the easiest (and only) way to make sure you don’t miss a game. I use it to watch my Las Vegas Packers.

Reports suggest that Google is paying more than $2 billion per year for the exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket, but that has yet to be confirmed. For comparison, DirecTV paid approximately $1.5 billion and charged its users $300 per season for Sunday Ticket.

However, considering that DirecTV only had about 2 million people using NFL Ticket, it was losing millions of dollars a year. We’re not sure how much Google will charge to add NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV or YouTube, but I expect ad revenue to keep the cost below what DirecTV charged.

Google is now in a position to not only attract new customers to its streaming TV service, but this move could boost YouTube viewers, increase revenue, and cement it as the go-to service for streaming sports for years to come. .

For now, we’re not sure how much Google will charge for NFL Sunday Ticket, the NFL RedZone package, or how it will stack up next to the current YouTube TV Sports Plus add-on. We’ll know more before the 2023 NFL season.
