Did you buy a new Chromecast or streaming device and have an old Chromecast laying around? Don’t throw it in a drawer and forget about it, turn it into a digital photo frame for yourself or a family member.

Let’s be realistic here. Digital photo frames are a niche product category that has never really taken off as you might expect. On paper, it makes a great gift, especially for older and distant relatives. You buy this thing, set it up for them, and keep them updated with baby pictures and all that good stuff.

In reality, they often end up in the box, set but forgotten, or sitting on a side table, perpetually unlit.

I have pretty strong opinions on how bad digital photo frames dedicated to a gift are and how great a replacement for digital photo frames Chromecast is, but it comes down to this.

The Chromecast is easy to remotely update with new photos, automatically applies firmware updates, and can be used for tasks other than viewing pictures, such as watching YouTube videos. Even older-generation Chromecasts are perfect for light photo and video slideshows.

Chromecast with Google TV

Pass your old Chromecast to a family member and take this 4K compatible model as an upgrade for yourself.

Would I want a first generation Chromecast as my only streaming device? No, not today. But to slap her grandma’s TV so she can hit the enter button to switch from her cable box to Chromecast every time she wants to see photos of her grandkids, she really can’t beat it.

So if you have an old Chromecast gathering dust or are looking for an excuse to upgrade the one you have, there’s no better time than the present to set up that old Chromecast to display photos or even serve as a digital art frame.
