Having trouble opening the Xbox app on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC? It is quite a common problem, and there are a few ways to fix this problem. We’ll show you how to fix it so the Xbox app opens normally again.

Restart your PC

When you first encounter the Xbox app not starting problem, restart your PC and see if that resolves your issue. Turning the computer off and on again helps fix many minor glitches.

Repair the date and time of your PC

Some applications require your PC to use the correct date and time. If your machine is using the wrong time or time zone settings, the Xbox app might not open.

In this case, allow your computer to automatically set the correct date and time. Do this first by right-clicking on the clock in the bottom right corner of your screen and choosing “Set date and time.”

select "Set date and time".

On the page that opens, enable the “Set time automatically” and “Set time zone automatically” options.

Your PC is now set to automatically use the correct date and time. Try opening the Xbox app again.

Turn off your antivirus (temporarily)

One possible reason for the Xbox app not starting is that your antivirus program has detected the app as a potential threat, blocking your access to it. If you’re sure you haven’t modified the app or another app has, disable your antivirus temporarily and see if the app opens.

The way you disable your antivirus depends on the program you are using. However, in most applications, you will find the button to disable protection on the main screen.

If you’re using Microsoft Defender Antivirus, you can turn it off by going to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings and disabling “Real-time protection.” In the “User Account Control” message that opens, choose “Yes.”

disable "real time protection".

When your antivirus is disabled, try starting the Xbox app.

Warnings: If you leave your antivirus disabled, you will be exposed to attacks, so you should re-enable it as soon as possible.

Restart Xbox services

Xbox runs various services in the background on your PC to provide you with various gaming features. One or more of these services may not work properly and prevent you from launching the application. You can easily find those services on your PC and restart them, which will probably fix any issues with them.

To do so, open the Run dialog by pressing Windows+R. Then type the following in the box and press Enter (or click “OK”).

Open Windows Services.

In the “Services” window, look for any services that say “Xbox.” Then right-click on each service and in the menu that opens, choose “Restart”.

select "Restart" on the menu.

When you’re done restarting all Xbox services, open the Xbox app and see if that works.

Use the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

Windows 11 and 10 include several troubleshooters to help you fix problems with your PC’s hardware and software components. When it comes to app-related issues, such as the Xbox app not opening, you can use the Windows Store apps troubleshooter on your PC to automatically find and fix problems with your apps.

If you’re on Windows 11, you can run the troubleshooter by going to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, looking for “Windows Store apps” in the list, and selecting “Run” next to it.

Choose "Execute" next to "Windows Store Apps".

If you’re on Windows 10, you’ll go to Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select “Windows Store apps” and choose “Run the troubleshooter.”

In the troubleshooter window, allow the tool to detect problems with your applications.

Repair your Xbox app

One of the reasons why your Xbox app won’t open is that the app itself has some kind of bug. In this case, use your PC’s repair option to repair the application and possibly get it working.

If you have Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Then next to “Xbox” in the list, click on the three dots and choose “Advanced”.

select "Advanced Options".

If you’re on Windows 10, go to Settings > Apps, select “Xbox” from the list, and choose “Advanced.”

On the next page, in the “Reset” section, click “Repair” to repair the application.

Choose "Fix".

When the application is repaired, run it. If the problem persists, in the “Reset” section, click “Reset” to return the app to its factory settings. This will clear the app data and probably solve your problem.

Reinstall the game services app

The Xbox app depends on the Gaming Services app on your PC to work. If this app has a problem, that might be the reason why you can’t open the Xbox app on your PC. In this case, you can reinstall the Gaming Services app to fix your problem.

To do this, open a PowerShell window with administrator rights. Do this by opening the “Start” menu, searching for “PowerShell” and clicking “Run as administrator.”

select "Execute as an administrator" on the right.

At the “User Account Control” prompt, select “Yes.”

Then in the PowerShell window, type the following command and press Enter.

get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers

Uninstall game services.

In case you’re wondering, here’s what the parameters of this command do:

  • get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices: This part tells PowerShell to get the “Game Services” package (which is what you’re going to uninstall).
  • delete-AppxPackage: This tells PowerShell to remove the specified package, which is “Game Services”.
  • -all users: This part ensures that “Game Services” is removed for all user accounts on your computer and not just your account.

When you have finished running the above command, run the following command.

start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

Here the start ms-windows-store The command tells your PC to open the Microsoft Store, and the productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN part tells you to open the “Game Services” page (so you don’t end up on the Store home page).

When you get to the Gaming Services app page on the Microsoft Store, reinstall the app by clicking the “Get” button. Then at the “User Account Control” prompt, select “Yes.”

select "Obtain".

When you have installed Gaming Services, restart your PC. Then launch the Xbox app and see if it works.

Update the Xbox app

You probably know that outdated apps often have problems and don’t work as well as newer versions. Your Xbox app might be out of date and causing you all sorts of problems.

In this case, update your app to the latest version and your problem will likely be fixed. You can also get new features in the latest version of the app.

Updating the Xbox app is as easy as clicking a button. To do this, open the “Start” menu, search for “Microsoft Store” and select that item in the search results.

Choose "Microsoft Store".

In the Microsoft Store, search for and select “Xbox.” On the app page, choose “Update” to update the app.

Note: If you don’t see the “Update” button, your app is already up to date and you don’t need to do anything.

windows update

Just like with your apps, your Windows operating system may have a glitch, causing the Xbox app to fail to start. Since you can’t manually repair your system files, you can run a Windows software update and get bug fixes to resolve your issues.

If you’re on Windows 11, you can do this by going to Settings > Windows Update, clicking “Check for updates” and installing any available updates.

select "Search for updates".

To update a Windows 10 PC, go to Settings > Update & security, click “Check for updates,” and install the updates that are listed.

choose "Search for updates".

When you’re done updating and rebooting your PC, start Xbox and it will work. Enjoy!
