Apple showed off iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 last month at WWDC, the next major updates for the iPhone and iPad, respectively. After several developer builds, the public beta is now ready for everyone to try.
The first beta builds were already easy to install on iPhones and iPads, but they were primarily intended for developers testing apps and games. The public beta marks the beginning of a more stable iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 experience, aimed at the general public before the final release in a few months. No developer account or workaround required—just go to Apple’s Beta Software Program portal and enroll your device.
The iOS 16 update for iPhone includes a more customizable lock screen, improvements to Focus and Messages mode, multi-stop trips in Apple Maps, ‘forward’ for Mail, and much more. The corresponding iPadOS 16 has most of those improvements, with the addition of Stage Manager for multitasking (though only on M1-powered iPads), a revamped weather app, proper external display support (again, only for M1), and other improvements.
As with all preview software, you must No install the beta version of iOS or iPadOS on a device you depend on every day. Apple has had a few beta builds from developers to fix the worst bugs, but it’s likely that some issues still remain. If you don’t have a spare iPhone or iPad, it’s best to wait for the final stable version, when it will be ready for the best iPhones.
