Whether you first saw aluminum foil lining an oven at your grandmother’s house or saw the practice online, it’s an oft-cited trick for keeping your appliance clean. But does it work and is it safe?

If you’re lining your oven with aluminum foil, it’s time to stop because you could not only ruin your food, but your oven as well.

The idea behind lining your oven bottom with aluminum foil is that it will help trap drippings and dirt, ultimately making your oven easier to clean. In theory, it’s a good idea. However, there are several things that could go wrong.

When it comes to your own oven, lining it with aluminum foil could cause your heating elements to be damaged due to reflected heat. Aluminum foil might also not be strong enough to withstand the high temperatures of the oven for long periods of time, which could melt and damage it. As for food, airflow could be blocked, resulting in poor cooking of food, and the reflective surface could speed up cooking and burn baked goods. Not good, right?

Fortunately, there are alternatives that can help keep your oven clean without affecting your food or appliance.

Oven-safe bottom liners can catch drips and spills in your oven without putting your food or appliance at risk. They are affordable and readily available on Amazon and most major retailers, just make sure you use them exactly as directed. Don’t like oven bags? If you’re cooking something that can spill over like a casserole, try placing your casserole dish on a cookie sheet, then place the tray inside your oven. This allows the cookie sheet to catch drips.

However, none of this means that you can avoid cleaning your oven. Fortunately, though, oven cleaning doesn’t have to be so daunting.
